Book Review – Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

“Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch marked my initiation into the realm of science fiction, and I must say, I was thoroughly impressed. I had held the misconception that sci-fi novels were too laden with scientific jargon for me to grasp, leading me to avoid the genre altogether. However, when we decided to host Scifi September at Bell Book & Candle, I found myself with no option but to delve into this uncharted territory.

Stepping out of my reading comfort zone felt like a significant achievement, one I’d cherish. The book opened with an abduction, immediately capturing my attention, and this was merely the beginning. Brace yourself for a riveting journey because, after every few pages, there was a “woah” moment waiting to astound me.

The characters, from Jason and Daniela to Amanda and Charlie, as well as the supporting cast, were depicted with such brilliance that an instant personal connection formed. I found myself envisioning their experiences, right alongside them, throughout the narrative.

Within its pages, “Dark Matter” weaves a tapestry of action, emotion, violence, extreme weather, alternate realities, and doppelgängers. It’s an amalgamation of everything, just short of zombies and apocalypse scenarios. Nevertheless, the book keeps you on your toes, delivering nail-biting moments where it appears that the characters might surrender, only to surge back with newfound determination, embarking on another captivating adventure in an alternate world.

In the latter half of the story, the narrative takes a dramatic leap. The level of complexity and intrigue multiplies to a mind-boggling degree, and it maintains this gripping intensity right until the very end. The conclusion, in its own unique way, signifies both closure and a fresh beginning. (I secretly hold out hope for a sequel!)

Thank you Blake Crouch for making me fall in love with the genre. couldn’t have asked for a better entry into the crazy mad world of science fiction.
